Puerto Rico Travel Guide: Beaches, Adventures & Places Worth Visiting
Updated: Oct 19
Puerto Rico is one of those destinations that offers a little bit of everything. Beautiful beaches, colorful historic streets, tropical landscapes, incredible food, and plenty of opportunities for adventure. Whether you're looking for a relaxing Caribbean getaway or a trip packed with activities, there's so much to explore on this island!
I visited Puerto Rico a while back and had such a great time experiencing the destination. Now that I'm planning to return for my bachelorette trip, I've been looking back at some of my favorite memories and putting together even more places to explore.
One of the best things about Puerto Rico is how many different experiences you can fit into one trip. You can spend one day wandering through historic neighborhoods, another enjoying the beaches, and another exploring the island's natural beauty.
And for my fellow Kansas City travelers, there's even more reason to start planning! Southwest Airlines has announced new nonstop flights from Kansas City to San Juan beginning in June 2027.
Here's a look at some of the places and experiences worth adding to your Puerto Rico itinerary!
Spend a Day on the Water in Puerto Rico
One of the best ways to experience Puerto Rico is by getting out on the water! With beautiful beaches, crystal-clear water, and nearby islands to explore, there are plenty of options for a fun day in the sun.
During our trip, we rented a private yacht, which was such a fun way to enjoy the scenery and spend time on the water. However, there are plenty of other options, including group catamaran excursions, snorkeling tours, sailing trips, and island-hopping adventures.
Whether you're looking to relax on a boat or explore places like Icacos and Culebra, I'd definitely recommend adding a water activity to your Puerto Rico itinerary!
Go Bioluminescent Kayaking
One of the most unique experiences in Puerto Rico is kayaking through its bioluminescent bays! These waters are home to tiny organisms that create a glowing blue-green effect when disturbed, making for an unforgettable nighttime adventure.
We didn't get to experience this during our first visit, but it's at the top of my list for our next trip! Popular locations include Laguna Grande in Fajardo and Mosquito Bay on Vieques, which is known for its incredible bioluminescence.
If you're planning to go, try to book around a new moon when the darker skies make the glow easier to see!
Explore DISTRITO T-Mobile
If you're looking for a fun night out in Puerto Rico, definitely check out DISTRITO T-Mobile in San Juan! This entertainment district is filled with restaurants, bars, music, and activities, making it a great place to spend an evening.
We had such a fun time walking around, grabbing something to eat, and taking in the atmosphere. Whether you're looking for dinner, drinks, or nightlife, it's a great spot to add to your itinerary!
Wander Through Old San Juan
One of the prettiest places to explore in Puerto Rico is Old San Juan! Between the colorful historic buildings, cobblestone streets, local shops, and countless restaurants and bars, you could easily spend hours wandering around.
We loved exploring the area, popping into different shops, and taking in all the beautiful architecture. It's one of those places where simply walking around is an experience in itself!
While you're there, make sure to visit Parque de las Palomas (Pigeon Park), a small park overlooking San Juan Bay that's famous for its many pigeons. You can watch the birds gather around visitors while enjoying beautiful views of the water. It's definitely one of the more unique stops in Old San Juan!
Explore El Yunque National Forest
Did you know Puerto Rico is home to the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System? El Yunque National Forest is filled with lush greenery, waterfalls, hiking trails, and incredible mountain views. It's a great option if you're looking to spend a day exploring the island's natural beauty beyond the beaches.
Go Ziplining at Toro Verde Adventure Park
If you're looking for an adrenaline rush, Toro Verde Adventure Park in Orocovis is home to some seriously impressive ziplines, including The Monster! You'll soar high above the mountains while taking in incredible views of Puerto Rico's landscape. This is definitely one for adventure lovers!
Visit the Caves of Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico has some incredible cave systems worth exploring! Río Camuy Cave Park is known for its massive limestone caverns and underground river system, while Cueva Ventana is famous for its natural window overlooking the surrounding valley. Both offer a completely different perspective of the island. Be sure to check current tour availability and access before visiting.
Take a Day Trip to Culebra
For some of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico, consider a day trip to Culebra! This small island is home to Flamenco Beach, famous for its white sand and gorgeous turquoise water. You can get there by ferry or a short flight, making it a great option for travelers wanting to explore beyond mainland Puerto Rico.
Explore Cabo Rojo
Located on Puerto Rico's southwestern coast, Cabo Rojo is known for its dramatic cliffs, beautiful beaches, and historic Los Morrillos Lighthouse. It's a gorgeous area for scenic views, photography, and enjoying a quieter side of the island.
Experience Puerto Rico's Pork Highway
Food lovers should consider visiting Guavate, a mountain community famous for its traditional Puerto Rican lechoneras! Along what's known as the Pork Highway, you'll find restaurants serving slow-roasted pork, traditional sides, and sometimes live music. It's a fun way to experience another side of Puerto Rico's food culture.
Where to Eat & Drink in Puerto Rico
One thing we definitely didn't skip in Puerto Rico was the food! We visited so many different restaurants and bars throughout our trip, and there were a few that really stood out.
Brunch at Chloe was easily one of our favorites! Located near the water, it's a beautiful spot to enjoy a leisurely brunch. It's also a great option if you're looking for somewhere to grab a meal before heading to the airport.
We also made a stop at Casa BACARDÍ, where you can learn about the history of one of the world's most famous rum brands. Founded in Cuba in 1862, BACARDÍ expanded its operations to Puerto Rico in 1936. Today, visitors can enjoy tours, tastings, and cocktail experiences at its distillery in Cataño.
And of course, you can't visit Puerto Rico without trying a piña colada! We stopped at Barrachina in Old San Juan, which claims to have invented the famous cocktail in 1963. While there's some debate about its exact origins, it's a fun piece of Puerto Rican history and a great stop while exploring the colorful streets of Old San Juan!
Is Puerto Rico Worth Visiting?
Absolutely! Puerto Rico is a destination I'd happily visit again, and I'm already looking forward to exploring more of the island on my next trip.
Whether you're planning a girls' getaway, a romantic vacation, a family trip, or just looking for somewhere warm to escape to, Puerto Rico has so much to offer. From the beaches and historic streets to the food and outdoor adventures, there's no shortage of ways to spend your time.
