Kansas City Guide: Where to Go for a Fancy Dinner
Updated: 6 days ago
Sometimes you just need an excuse to get dressed up and enjoy a really good meal! Whether you're visiting Kansas City for the first time, celebrating a special occasion, planning a date night, or simply treating yourself, the metro has some incredible restaurants worth checking out.
From elegant steakhouses and creative cocktails to intimate dining rooms and memorable menus, I've rounded up some of my favorite spots for a fancier night out in Kansas City. And don't worry, you don't necessarily need a special occasion to enjoy them!
Nōka
📍 334 E. 31st Street, Kansas City, MO 64108
Nōka is easily one of my favorite upscale restaurants in Kansas City! Tucked away in Martini Corner, this Japanese-inspired restaurant makes you feel like you've stepped outside of KC entirely. The moody lighting, natural wood, and beautiful Japanese farmhouse aesthetic make the atmosphere just as memorable as the food!
My absolute favorite dish is the dry-aged salmon nigiri, but their menu also features creative pasta dishes, steaks, seafood, and more. The menu changes seasonally, so there's always something new to try!
Here's a cool fact: Nōka means "farmer" in Japanese, and chef-owner Amante Domingo created the restaurant as a tribute to his late father, who operated an organic farm in Missouri. Some of the wood throughout the restaurant even came from the family farm!
Whether you're planning a romantic date night or celebrating something special, Nōka is worth experiencing for the ambiance alone!
Stock Hill
📍 Stock Hill | 4800 Main Street, Kansas City, MO
If you're looking for an upscale steakhouse in Kansas City, Stock Hill is one to add to your list! Located near the Country Club Plaza, this restaurant has a beautiful, sophisticated atmosphere, an extensive food menu, and plenty of cocktails and wine to choose from.
We've actually only visited for their Thursday Girl Dinner special, which includes a salad, triple-cooked fries, and a martini for $25. It's such a fun excuse to get dressed up and enjoy a night out! Of course, we couldn't resist ordering a few extras, including my personal favorite: oysters. I pretty much have to order them every time I visit!
While we've loved their Girl Dinner experience, Stock Hill also offers a full dinner menu with steaks, seafood, and plenty of other options for a special night out. Whether you're stopping in for cocktails and appetizers or planning a full dinner, it's a beautiful spot to keep on your Kansas City dining list.
JJ's Restaurant
📍 900 W. 48th Place, Suite 110, Kansas City, MO 64112
A Kansas City dining staple since 1985, JJ's is a fantastic spot for a date night or special occasion near the Country Club Plaza! I attended a creator event here and got to sample a little bit of everything. The steaks were cooked to perfection, but my absolute favorite was the Paco Shrimp appetizer — bacon-wrapped shrimp stuffed with horseradish. Seriously, don't skip it!
From steaks and seafood to pasta, salads, and delicious desserts, there's something for everyone. They also have a beautiful patio and an impressive wine selection, which earned them recognition as a 2025 James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program.
Whether you're visiting KC or planning a fancy night out, JJ's is definitely worth adding to your list!
The Savoy
📍 219 W. 9th Street, Kansas City, MO 64105
If you love restaurants with history and character, The Savoy is a must-visit in downtown Kansas City! Located inside the historic Hotel Savoy, this restaurant dates back to 1903 and feels like stepping back in time. Between the stained glass windows, beautiful murals, and elegant atmosphere, it's one of KC's most unique dining experiences.
We visited for date night and absolutely loved it! The Cacio e Pepe was a favorite, and whatever you do, don't skip the bread and butter! Their menu also features steaks, seafood, creative cocktails, and even a Girl Dinner option for a fun night out.
Here's a cool fact: President Harry S. Truman was a regular, and you can still see his favorite booth, No. 4! The Savoy was also named America's Best Historic Restaurant in 2023.
Whether you're visiting Kansas City or planning a special night out, The Savoy is worth experiencing for both the food and the history!
Zero Zero Handmade Pasta
📍 1702 Summit St, Kansas City, MO 64108
If you love fresh, homemade pasta, Zero Zero is a spot you'll want to add to your Kansas City dining list! One of the coolest parts of the experience is the open kitchen, where you can actually watch the team making pasta from scratch while you dine.
Whatever you do, start with the salad and bread and butter. SO good! The freshly made pasta is obviously the star of the show, but those starters are absolutely worth ordering, too.
Between the delicious food, inviting atmosphere, and getting to watch the pasta-making process, Zero Zero is a great choice for a date night or a fun dinner out with friends. It's the kind of place where the experience is just as enjoyable as the meal!
Tailleur
📍 3933 Main Street, Kansas City, MO 64111
If you're looking for a romantic date night in Kansas City, Tailleur is one of my favorite recommendations! I've visited twice, once while helping capture content and another time for a bachelorette party, and both experiences were incredible.
This French-inspired restaurant has a beautiful, intimate atmosphere filled with antiques, equestrian touches, and European charm. My personal favorites are the peach and brie appetizer and the pork chop. Both were absolutely delicious!
Here's a fun fact: Tailleur opened in 2021, and owner Heather White found an antique French sign in Kansas City's West Bottoms that inspired the restaurant's name and spelling!
Between the incredible food, thoughtful decor, and cozy atmosphere, Tailleur is definitely a spot worth dressing up for!
Kiyoshi Omakase
📍 8016 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, KS 66204
If you're looking for an upscale dinner that's more of an experience, Kiyoshi Omakase is a MUST! After getting engaged in Japan and celebrating with our first omakase experience in Tokyo, I was so excited to discover one right here in the Kansas City metro!
I visited with a good friend who was preparing for her own trip to Japan, and we had such a fun evening! Omakase means "I'll leave it up to you," and that's exactly what happens. Instead of ordering from a traditional menu, the chef prepares a multi-course meal right in front of you, featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients. My personal favorites were the miso cod and scallop!
Here's a cool fact: Kiyoshi has just eight seats, making the experience incredibly intimate! We started with sake, enjoyed course after course, and finished with dessert. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, and they even make birthday celebrations feel like a little party!
Whether you're planning a date night, celebrating something special, or simply love Japanese cuisine, this is one of the most unique dining experiences in the KC metro. Just be sure to make a reservation in advance!
1587 Prime
📍 1500 Baltimore Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64108
We visited 1587 Prime with a couple of friends just a few weeks after it opened because we were so excited to check it out! Co-founded by Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, this upscale steakhouse gets its name from their jersey numbers, 15 and 87.
While everything we tried was delicious, I have to say the atmosphere might be even better than the food! The restaurant puts an elevated twist on familiar favorites, making it a fun spot for date night, celebrations, or dinner with friends. I ordered the meatballs and a salad, while my fiancé went with the steak frites. Everything was fantastic!
Between the stylish interior, lively atmosphere, and live music, it's definitely an experience. They've also added brunch to their offerings, giving you another reason to visit!
Whether you're visiting Kansas City or looking for a fun night out with friends, 1587 Prime is worth checking out!
Chaz on the Plaza
📍 325 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO 64112
If you're looking for an elegant dinner with a little extra Kansas City charm, Chaz on the Plaza is a fantastic choice! Located inside the historic Raphael Hotel, this restaurant offers a romantic atmosphere, delicious food, and even live jazz music that adds such a special touch to the experience.
I attended a creator tasting event featuring one of their seasonal menus, so we got to sample a little bit of everything! Everything was absolutely delicious, but the desserts were easily my favorite part. From steaks and fresh seafood to creative seasonal dishes, you really can't go wrong here!
Here's a fun fact: Chaz celebrates Kansas City's rich jazz history with live musicians performing in the lounge nightly. They also have an award-winning wine list and offer a weekend brunch!
Whether you're planning a romantic date night, celebrating something special, or visiting Kansas City for the first time, Chaz is a wonderful spot to enjoy an elevated dining experience with a little live music!
The Stilwell at Loews Kansas City
📍 1515 Wyandotte Street, Kansas City, MO 64108
The Stilwell is easily one of my favorite upscale dining spots in downtown Kansas City! Located inside the beautiful Loews Kansas City Hotel, this restaurant combines modern elegance with locally inspired American cuisine. The atmosphere is absolutely gorgeous, with an open kitchen and beautiful views of downtown.
Their charcuterie board featuring locally sourced cheeses and meats is a MUST-TRY! We also really enjoyed their barbecue platter, and they have fantastic steaks and plenty of other options on the menu.
Here's a fun fact: The Stilwell is named after a historic railroad car that transported fresh oysters to Kansas City's City Market in the late 1800s! The restaurant also partners with several local farms and producers to bring Kansas City flavors to its menu.
And whatever you do, don't leave without stopping by Bar Stilwell afterward! Located in the hotel lobby, it's a beautiful spot to grab a cocktail and continue your night. Whether you're staying at Loews or just looking for a memorable dinner downtown, this is one restaurant worth checking out!
Mineral Lounge
📍 1700 Broadway Boulevard, Kansas City, MO 64108
If you're looking for an elevated dining experience in Kansas City, Mineral Lounge is a great spot for your next date night! With its sophisticated atmosphere, creative dishes, and thoughtfully curated cocktails, it's perfect for a special occasion or simply treating yourself to a nice evening out.
We visited during Kansas City Restaurant Week and got to sample a few different dishes. Everything we tried was delicious! While we didn't explore the entire menu, we really enjoyed the experience and beautiful presentation.
Here's a fun fact: Mineral Lounge is the sister concept of Tannin Wine Bar and features Mediterranean-inspired small plates and an impressive wine selection. It's also located near the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, making it a great spot to visit before or after a show!
Between the ambiance, elevated food, and intimate setting, Mineral Lounge is definitely worth adding to your Kansas City date-night list!
801 Chophouse
📍 71 E. 14th Street, Kansas City, MO 64106
If you're looking for a classic, upscale steakhouse experience in downtown Kansas City, 801 Chophouse is a great choice! This restaurant has an elegant, old-school atmosphere that feels perfect for a romantic date night, anniversary, or special celebration.
They're known for their premium steaks, including dry-aged USDA Prime cuts and Wagyu beef, but you'll also find fresh seafood, delicious shareable sides, and an impressive wine selection. We LOVED the calamari appetizer. The dark wood interiors and sophisticated dining room give it that timeless steakhouse feel!
Fun fact: 801 Chophouse originally opened in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1993 and has since expanded to several cities across the country! While it isn't exclusive to Kansas City, it's still a wonderful option for anyone looking to have a nice dinner!
Kansas City has so much more to offer than just barbecue, and these restaurants are proof that you can find some incredible upscale dining experiences throughout the metro!
Whether you're a local looking to try somewhere new or visiting for a weekend getaway, I hope this guide helps you find your next memorable meal. I'll continue adding restaurants as I explore more of Kansas City's dining scene, so be sure to check back for new recommendations.
And if you have a favorite fancy restaurant in KC that I haven't tried yet, I'd love to hear about it!
